GLADSTONE, Mich. (WZMQ) – On Wednesday, U.P. laborers came together to make an everyday activity more accessible for a Gladstone family.
The Upper Peninsula Construction Council and Michigan Building and Construction Trades Council constructed a wheelchair ramp at the home of a nine-year-old boy with spina bifida. The Escanaba Elks contributed $2,500 for the building materials as part of their 2024 Major Projects.
Staff Representative Ryan Stern says when the Michigan Building Trades Council heard about the family’s need, they knew they wanted to lend a hand.
“For us, it’s anything we can do in the community to make the young man’s life a lot easier for him to get in and out of his house,” said Stern. “I mean, he was offloading out of his wheelchair and lumping up the steps to get in and out of his hous every day, so this will make his life a lot easier for the future. It’s a great feeling for us to be able to give back.”
