IRON MOUNTAIN, Mich. (WZMQ) – On Friday, September 20, the Iron Mountain Police Department responded to alarming reports of an individual barricaded with a handgun on the city’s Northside. Upon their arrival, officers heard a gunshot fired from the basement of the residence, heightening the urgency of the situation.
In an effort to ensure the safety of the surrounding area while trying to communicate with the barricaded individual, the department called in the Critical Incident Response Team (C.I.R.T.), a specialized tactical unit of officers from agencies throughout Dickinson County.
As CIRT officers arrived on the scene, another shot rang out from the basement. CIRT negotiators successfully established initial contact with the subject, but communication was soon interrupted. Suddenly, the individual exited the basement unexpectedly, armed with a handgun. In response, CIRT officers deployed less-than- lethal bean bag rounds to subdue the individual.
In a statement following the incident, the Iron Mountain Police expressed gratitude for the collaborative efforts that allowed for a safe resolution to this potentially dangerous situation. They extended their appreciation to the Michigan State Police, Dickinson County Sheriff’s Department, Kingsford Public Safety, Norway Police Department, Iron Mountain Fire Department, and Integrity Care EMS for their assistance.
The police emphasized that the safety of residents remains their top priority, assuring the community that all necessary measures were taken to achieve a peaceful outcome.
