MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) — The campus of Northern Michigan University (NMU) will be bustling with activity this week as the school hosts its annual homecoming events.
This year marks the institution’s 125th anniversary.
“The excitement of NMU’s Homecoming weekend rolls around each year with the student activities, the parade, the football game and the alumni gatherings, but this year we are layering on the celebration of our 125th anniversary with additional events such as the free community concert,” said Derek Hall, university chief marketing officer. “The opportunity to celebrate Northern together is what makes Homecoming special.”
One of the highlights will be the NMU homecoming parade. The parade steps off Friday at 5:30 p.m. from Fair Ave. in front of the Berry Events Center and continues down Third Street to Hewitt. From Hewitt the parade turns onto Front Street and ends at the Superior Dome.
Following the parade, a free country music concert will take place behind the Superior Dome beginning at 6:30 p.m.
Saturday festivities include tailgating from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. outside the dome followed by this year’s football game with the Wildcats taking on Alma College at 1 p.m.
“I’m really excited,” said Tas Stoetzner, homecoming student organizer. “It’s fun. I’ve talked with a lot of students and friends, and they are very excited.”
There are additional on campus activities to celebrate homecoming. The full homecoming schedule is available here.
