Iron Mountain Police & Fire golf outing rallies community for student scholarships

IRON MOUNTAIN, Mich. (WZMQ) – The annual Iron Mountain Police and Fire Golf Outing took place this weekend at Pine Grove Country Club, drawing support from local businesses and raising funds for scholarships aimed at students pursuing careers in criminal justice and fire science.

Apparatus Engineer Nate Furton from the Iron Mountain Fire Department expressed gratitude for the community’s involvement. “We’re doing our annual police and fire golf outing to raise funds for local students going into police and fire careers. We’ve got 11 teams signed up, and they are 4-person teams,” Furton explained. The outing continues to be a successful event to give back to the next generation of public safety professionals.

First National Bank President Russell Kassin spoke on behalf of one of the event’s key sponsors. “We’re participating because our police and fire departments support us. This is another opportunity for us to show our support for the community,” said Kassin. He praised the efforts of the Iron Mountain Fire and Police Departments and encouraged ongoing community participation in events like the golf outing.

Local businesses that contributed to the success of the event included Pistol Crossfit, Ink Design and Apparel, Paul J. Fornetti Dentistry, Sunshine Travel and Tours, Liuna Local 1329, Labelle’s Rent-a-Car, and the Iron Mountain Retirees Association. Their combined efforts ensure that Iron Mountain continues to foster a strong community connection while giving back to local students.

This event follows other successful fundraisers hosted by the departments, such as the charity hockey game earlier this year at Mountain View Ice Arena, which raised money for local causes. Furton, who helped spearhead that event, reiterated the importance of these community efforts: “It’s great to see the community come together, and hopefully the support continues.”

Looking ahead, Furton shared that the Fire Department’s next community fundraising initiative would be in support of local charities, including the Cancer Closet. “We’re just hoping to get back out in the community,” Furton noted. Meanwhile, Kassin added that the city is gearing up for the upcoming hockey season. “In October, they start putting ice on, and they’re already cooling the ice rink right now,” he shared.

The golf outing, featuring cash prizes for the longest putt, closest to the pin, and longest drive, exemplified the spirit of camaraderie and commitment to future generations. As Kassin put it, “I think it just shows our support of the community again for the next up-and-comers.”

With the funds raised from this event, the Iron Mountain Police and Fire Departments continue their mission of service beyond their daily responsibilities—building not just a safer, but a stronger community for years to come.

Local students interested in pursuing a career in either Police or Fire should contact their school guidance counselor.
