Marquette County Planning Division to host Climate Action Plan community dialogues

by Sarah Blakely
August 26, 2024

MARQUETTE COUNTY, Mich. (WZMQ) – Marquette County residents have a chance to hear and weigh in on the county’s Climate Action Plan at a series of upcoming community meetings beginning Thursday.

The Marquette County Planning Division is hosting four dialogue dinners for residents to provide their input on the Climate Action Plan:

August 29 at River Rock Lanes in Ishpeming

September 12 at Up North Lodge in Gwinn

September 19 at Jerzi’s 41 in Ely Township

September 26 at Barrel + Beam in Marquette Township

All meetings will take place from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

These events will facilitate broader community input through informal discussions over buffet-style meals, complemented by a community survey for additional feedback from residents. Dinner is complimentary for participants, and there will be a cash bar.

In March 2023, the Marquette County Board of Commissioners passed a resolution titled “Supporting Measures to Respond to a Changing Climate.” The Planning Division says the resolution lays the framework for the development of a comprehensive Climate Action Plan. The plan will consist of two parts: 1. A strategic roadmap to eliminate greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 at County operated facilities to be in alignment with MI Healthy Climate Plan, and 2. Update regional climate trends and data.

The county board has selected Johnson Controls Inc. to conduct an ASHRAE Level 2 Energy Audit, a greenhouse gas emissions inventory, and a fleet review and electric vehicle analysis for County facilities. The Planning Division says this audit will serve as the foundation for the initial step. The four community meetings will serve as the second step.

RSVPs are encouraged at this link. If childcare is needed at the event, please note on your RSVP. All food scraps and organic waste from this event series will be composted with Partridge Creek Compost.
