ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – Attendees of the U.P. State Fair have the opportunity to see some newborn farm animals—and maybe even catch some being born.
The Miracle of Life Pavilion has live sheep and their lambs, baby chicks, quail eggs, and an ostrich egg. As of Tuesday morning, one ewe was still waiting to give birth.
According to building superintendent Diana Abram, about four dozen chicks hatch each day. While the babies are cute to look at, she says the Miracle of Life Pavilion also aims to educate visitors about farm animals and the birthing process.
“I think it’s neat for people to see different animals being birthed and to experience an exhibit that everybody puts in time for,” said Abram. “We like to let people see what ‘Miracle of Life’ means. Having birth is a miracle.”
Abrams says caretakers occassionally have to help with a birth, but the majority of the animals have their babies entirely on their own. There are no dairy cows being born at this year’s fair due to state avian flu protocols.
The animals in the Miracle of Life Pavilion will be available to visit every day of the fair, which runs through Sunday, August 18. Click here to see the full schedule of fair activities.
