ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – This week, equestrians from across the Upper Peninsula and Wisconsin are in Escanaba for a four-day show.
The Upper Peninsula Quarter Horse Association (UPQHA) Summerfest Series kicked off Thursday morning at the U.P. State Fairgrounds. The event is presented by TNT Events and approved by the American and Wisconsin Quarter Horse Associations.
Participants compete in different classes of riding, trail courses, and showmanship. According to Trish Schmahl of TNT Events, the U.P. State Fairgrounds has hosted the UPQHA Summerfest Series since the early 1980s. She says the event is a chance for equestrians of all ages to demonstrate and develop their skills.
“We’re trying to bring those people that maybe are showing at open shows the opportunity to come and show at a quarter horse show here,” said Schmahl. “This is a really great location to kind of bridge that. This is a show that they continue to come back to because it’s a very laid-back feel and the community is just so, so welcoming.”
The UPQHA Summerfest Series continues through Sunday, August 4. The event is open to the public and free to attend. Activities begin daily at 9 a.m. and continue through the afternoon.
