MANISTIQUE, Mich. (WZMQ) – On Friday, Schoolcraft County community members hit the links for a worthy cause.
Nonprofit CBC hosted its fourth annual golf scramble at Indian Lake Golf Course. “CBC” is an acronym for the causes it supports. The first C is for the American Cancer Society and local cancer patients, the B is for Bay Cliff Health Camp, and the second C is for a community charity.
“We do fundraising throughout the year,” said CBC Committee member Magan Peterson. “We do the golf event, celebrity bartending, cornhole tournaments, volleyball tournaments, anything we can do to raise money for the charities.”
The CBC Committee is thrilled with the golf scramble’s growth since its inaugural year.
“We started with only 18 teams and we have now grown to over 50 teams,” said committee member Kara Ziminski. “It used to be one afternoon shift, and now we divide it up into morning and afternoon to accommodate more teams.”
Last year’s scramble brought in $22,000. CBC’s goal for Friday was to match or beat that amount. The local charity selected to represent the second C in “CBC” this year is the Beacon House in Marquette, which supports families traveling for medical care.
“I think Beacon House is actually probably near and dear to a lot of our hearts,” Peterson said. “I’ve stayed at Beacon House myself. I think it’s just really important to keep money local and do things that support our community members.”
Golf scramble attendee Kristie Mickelson said she knows the impact that CBC’s fundraising efforts can have firsthand.
“I had my own cancer journey seven years ago, and they helped me tremendously,” she said. “I love to support CBC when they’re helping everybody else.”
The day also included a live auction, raffles, and prizes for attendees.
“It’s our biggest fundraiser of the year,” said Ziminski. “Indian Lake Golf Course hosts a really great tournament for us, and everyone just has a great time out here.”
