NEGAUNEE, Mich. (WZMQ) – The Negaunee Public Library will be closed this weekend to remove recently discovered asbestos material.
While replacing the library’s carpeting, asbestos material was found in the tile and adhesive underneath the old carpet.
Yesterday the Negaunee city council unanimously approved the removal of the asbestos.
Removal started on Friday and is expected to continue until Monday morning.
Jessica Holman, the library director, said the asbestos has not caused any danger for staff or visitors.
“The asbestos in the tiling and adhesive is what’s called non-friable,” said Holman. “it is not in the air. We have not been at risk, the public has not been at risk. So while this is a really important thing to get done, it has not been a risk to our safety.”
Next week’s magic show, and the library’s book clubs will not be affected by the removal.
