ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – The trial of the Escanaba man accused of murdering 22-year-old Harley Corwin last summer has been postponed to 2025.
On July 8, 2023, Corwin was found dead in the woods of Ford River Township. Tavaris Lee Jackson, age 32 at the time, was arrested later that day.
Jackson faces charges of open murder, felony possession of a firearm at the time of the murder, and assault intentionally causing the death of Corwin’s unborn fetus. He was originally scheduled to stand trial on August 5, 2024.
On Friday, Judge John Economopoulos granted Jackson’s defense a stay of proceedings. Defense Attorney Diane Kay-Hougaboom told the judge that the Court of Appeals could not guarantee a swift response to an interlocutory appeal.
“Transcripts…have been submitted to the Court of Appeals,” she said. “I called the Court of Appeals…and asked for the timelines… Mike from the clerk’s office called me back and told me that the Attorney General’s Office had been given until Wednesday…of next week to respond, and then at some point after that, they will look at it.”
The trial is now set to begin on January 13, 2025. The court expects the trial to last at least three weeks.
