MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – The Sands Township Recycling and Transfer Station is hosting its second electrical recycling drop with EGLE this Friday and Saturday. These events help lessen the amount of electronics in landfills and also prevent the metals from contaminating the water and land.
EGLE or Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy, works as a safeguard for the State of Michigan’s environment, working on a regional, state, and federal level. The organization’s focus is to protect the natural resources while supporting the economic growth and development of Michigan’s future.
These events are open to the Marquette County and organizers will take anything from phones, computers, TVs, cables, routers, and especially batteries, of any kind. Organizers share that a common reaction from electronics in landfills is electrical fires due to sparks or energy in the batteries.
“Really trying to gather as much of this stuff out of this county so it’s not going into the woods or into the landfill, what we’re finding is people just have it stashed in their basement or their garage and they keep looking at it like ‘I don’t know what to do with it,’ so this is their chance,” Darlene Walch, Sands Township Supervisor.
This electrical recycling drop is Friday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. If you can’t make it this month there will be one the weekend of August 17th and September 21st. For more information on future drop-offs and more go to the Sands Township website.
