IRON MOUNTAIN, Mich. (WZMQ) – Iron Mountain Fire Department (IMFD) responded to a house fire at 901 East G Street. The emergency call came in at 7:11 p.m. on July 16, 2024, and Engine 2202, with a crew of 4 firefighters, was dispatched immediately. They arrived on the scene within 3 minutes to find smoke billowing from the attic vents and heavy smoke emanating from the front of the single-story ranch-style home.
The crew quickly assessed the situation and began their attack on the fire. As two firefighters stretched a hose line into the residence for initial fire suppression, a call for mutual aid was placed, bringing in additional support from Kingsford and Breitung Township fire departments. A second hose line was deployed, and 150 feet of 5-inch supply hose was connected to a hydrant to ensure a steady water supply.
Inside, firefighters encountered heavy smoke and fire conditions, concentrated in the kitchen and dining room. Despite the challenging conditions, they managed to extinguish the bulk of the fire. Ventilation efforts began immediately to clear the home of smoke and check for fire extensions, revealing pockets of fire in the ceiling and attic which were subsequently extinguished.
Significant smoke and heat damage affected much of the house, while the kitchen and dining room sustained heavy fire damage. Fortunately, no injuries were reported among civilians or firefighters. The IMFD was supported on the scene by Breitung Township FD, Kingsford FD, Iron Mountain Police Department, DTE Gas, Wisconsin Electric, Integrity Care EMS, Iron Mountain DPW, Dickinson County Victim Service Unit, and the Red Cross.
The absence of working smoke alarms in the home contributed to the fire going undetected for a longer period, allowing it to grow and delay the 911 call. All responding units were clear of the scene by 9:32 p.m.
