SAULT STE MARIE, Mich. (WZMQ) – The U.S. Coast Guard Sector Northern Great Lakes is investigating pollution in the St. Marys River near downtown Sault Ste. Marie.
The USCG reports at 5 p.m. Monday, the agency received a report of an oily sheen drifting down the St. Marys River. USCG Pollution Responders investigated the area and discovered the sheen near the USCG base, the Museum Ship Valley Camp, and the George Kemp Marine.
Pollution Responders determined it was about 10 gallons of an unknown substance. The Coast Guard is leading the response in collaboration with the Sault Ste. Marie Fire Department and the Army Corps of Engineers. GFL Environment has been hired to conduct the cleanup. A floating boom was placed in the water to keep the oil in the affected areas, and absorbent materials are being used to recover as much of the substance as possible.
The incident remains under investigation.
