Marquette, Mich. (WZMQ) – Yesterdays severe weather caused flooding on the campus of Northern Michigan University. Several student apartments saw considerable flooding to their ground floor bedrooms. University officials say that the amount of rainfall overwhelmed the drainage system and caused a sinkhole to open up, allowing even more water to flow into the apartments. Crews have been on scene since Monday night removing water logged carpeting and drywall, in efforts to eliminate any potential for mold. Director of Housing and Resident Life, Cat Hardenburgh says they are doing what they can to minimize the inconvenience to any displaced students.
“Some minor flooding in some apartments. There were a few that had more than six inches worth of water on the floor. we have three tenants who are displaced at this time. We have found some hotel rooms for them and have given them some money for meals and taking care of them.” Said Hardenburgh.
Hardenburgh also reminds those in residents in student apartments to remember renters insurance when moving in, as they, as renters, are liable for anything lost due to flooding.
