Escanaba Municipal Marina hosts Great Lakes Cruising Club Rendezvous

ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – Escanaba’s Municipal Marina is currently filled with ships from across the country.

In addition to the local slipholders, roughly 40 boats from the Great Lakes Cruising Club (GLCC) are docked at the marina this week.

“The reason that people join the Great Lakes Cruising Club is to have access to what we call harbor reports,” explained Great Lakes Cruising Club Commodore Doug Jackson. “We have a report on literally every marina in the Great Lakes and hundreds of anchorages, as well. It provides information on navigation, but it also has information about the services. Do they sell gasoline and diesel fuel? Do they have a laundromat? What are the nice restaurants they have close by? Is there a place to get your boat fixed?”

The club travels to a different city each year for the annual GLCC Rendezvous. This year, they selected Escanaba. bringing a large group of people into town.

“They come and then they’ll cruise that area, so they can go to Door County here or Fayette or all of the other places that are close by,” Jackson said. “Frankly, towns like Escanaba welcome an organization like us, make us feel at home, and we do feel at home and are happy to be here.”

While in Escanaba, boaters will take in the local culture and see the sights. They also have a full schedule of club events.

“Some of it is historical information that we try to learn about the area,” said Jackson. “It’s also just about fun, so we have dinners and activities, we have a cornhole tournament. Every day is completely full, Monday through Wednesday.”

The Great Lakes Cruising Club will then depart on Thursday. Jackson says they are looking forward to the rest of their time in Escanaba exploring yet another gem located on the Great Lakes.

“Everybody here is likeminded,” he said. “We all like boating and cruising, so instant friendships get built. We want our members to be happy, enjoy the cruising lifestyle that we have, meet new friends, and just have a good time. We’re thrilled to be here.”
