ISHPEMING, Mich. (WZMQ) – One man has been arrested following an incident involving a gun at the Old Fish Hatchery in Ishpeming.
At approximately 9:15 am on July 4, the Ishpeming City Police were dispatched to Jasper Ridge campground for a potential felonious assault involving a firearm. The incident occurred on a trail off of the campground heading toward the Ishpeming cemetery, at the old Ishpeming Fish Hatchery, which has been abandoned for several years.
It was reported that a male and a female were inside the fenced in area of the property, and confronted a hiker about trespassing onto the property. It was reported that the man brandished a firearm.
The incident was not reported right away, and sometime had lapsed before officers had been notified.
Officers attempted to make contact with the man and woman at the hatchery, and after several attempts a search warrant was obtained and officers conducted an extensive search of the property. Officers located several guns on the premises, which were confiscated, however the subjects were not initially found.
According to a press release sent out on the morning of the July 5, a 24-year-old man who is originally from Oklahoma was arrested in connection to the incident.
The suspect is lodged in the Marquette County Jail and is being charged with assault with a deadly weapon, a 4-year felony, and brandishing a weapon, a 90-day misdemeanor.
At this time, no names are being released pending arraignment, and the incident is still under investigation. WZMQ will continue to update this story as more information becomes available.
