MARQUETTE, Mich, (WZMQ) – Pet owners should keep a look out for edibles left behind while enjoying the outdoors this summer.
Tim Hunt, a veterinarian with Bayshore Veterinary Hospital said the most common areas to watch out for are at the beach and on biking and walking trails.
Signs an animal may have ingested marijuana are lethargy, dilated pupils, slow breathing, and dizziness.
Hunt said while the effects of the drug are not usually lethal, they can present other dangers.
“It’s not necessarily the toxicity, it’s the fact that it mimics other drugs,” said Hunt. “So the way the dog will look can be confused with other things which are much more serious. So they may have gotten into other medicines at home, and you think it is an edible and in fact it’s something else.”
Hunt also encourages those who have marijuana at home to keep it up and out of reach of their animals.
If you think your pet may have ingested marijuana or anything else that may be harmful, make sure to call a veterinarian right away.
