IRON MOUNTAIN, Mich. (WZMQ) – As Independence Day approaches, the City of Iron Mountain Police and Fire departments issued critical safety reminders regarding proper use of fireworks. Fire Inspector Alix Loker and Deputy Director of Police Services Jeff Solka highlighted the importance of safety and legality during the upcoming celebrations.
Fire Inspector Alix Loker emphasized the dangers associated with improper firework handling. “Every year we get numerous hand injuries from people holding fireworks, improper lighting techniques, all that kind of stuff. So please make sure when you’re lighting off fireworks, do it properly, have a stand for them, and please don’t hold them. It’s very dangerous.” She also addressed the frequent issue of firework-induced fires, urging residents to take preventive measures. “Every 4th of July, we deal with a few grass fires from fireworks. Always have a hose or bucket of water ready. And when disposing of fireworks, ensure they’re fully cooled by submerging them in water for a couple of days.”
Loker’s concerns were echoed by Deputy Director of Police Services Jeff Solka, who underscored the legal framework surrounding firework use in the City of Iron Mountain.
“Our city ordinance follows the state law as far as when the fireworks cannot be prohibited, which is June 29 to July 4. This year, being that July 5 is on a Friday, fireworks are still allowed on Friday, July 5 until 11:45 p.m.,” stated Solka.
Solka further elaborated on the permitted times.
“Fireworks are permitted from June 29 – July 5 this year, until 11:45 pm each night. They must be set off from private property, not on streets or sidewalks. People should refrain from consuming alcohol and lighting off fireworks. Both of those do not mix very well together. And over the last few years we have had incidents where fireworks have started fires. We did have a home, luckily it was a vacant home on the northside of our town that did a couple of years ago,” remarked Solka.
Loker concluded with a reminder for vigilant supervision and responsible disposal. “Just have somebody watching out for you, double-checking things.”
Both Iron Mountain Police and Fire officials want to wish everyone a safe and happy 4th of July celebration.
“Make sure you’re disposing of things properly, and have a happy 4th,” said Loker.
Solka shared, “I just hope that everybody enjoys the 4th of July and has a safe holiday week”
By following guidelines and taking safety precautions, Iron Mountain residents can look forward to a festive and safe Independence Day celebration.
