DULUTH, Minn. (WZMQ) – The Michipicoten will sail from Thunder Bay, Ontario to a repair facility in Superior, Wisconsin on Thursday.
The U.S. Coast Guard says the vessel will be escorted by a tug boat during its transit, which is expected to take about 18 hours. The USCG says the Michipicoten will undergo permanent repairs after being damaged on June 8.
The USCG has been working with Transport Canada, the Canadian Coast Guard, the vessel owner, Naval engineers, the National Weather Service, and third-party surveyors to make sure the Michipicoten arrives safely in Wisconsin. The team effort included the safe offloading of all cargo, a thorough structural survey of the vessel, completion of temporary repairs, extensive engineering analysis, and creating a comprehensive transit plan.
The Michipicoten was rerouted to Thunder Bay on June 8 after taking on water in Lake Superior. Eleven of the 22-person crew were evacuated from the vessel at the time of the incident. No injuries were reported.
