IRON MOUNTAIN, Mich. (WZMQ) – This Saturday, from 9 a.m. – 11 a.m. CST, the Northern Lights YMCA is hosting its annual Mountain Mud Sling at Pine Mountain Ski Resort. As temperatures are predicted to soar, this family-friendly obstacle course promises a fun and challenging way to stay cool.
“The Mountain Mud Sling is an exciting event that kicks off at Pine Mountain Resort,” said Sandi Bingham, Fitness Supervisor and Race Director. “Participants will tackle 500 stairs, navigate through various obstacles, including the ice box filled with ice water, and the tire agility and tractor flip challenges.”
The course also features a water jug carry, supported by the National Guard, and a low crawl organized by the Air Force. The highlight for many is the mud pit, hosted by the Breitung Township Fire Department, where participants can dive into a refreshing, muddy mess before heading to the showers. For those with extra energy, there’s the opportunity to run the course again and vie for the coveted King of the Mountain title.
Covering approximately 2 miles, the event is designed for all ages and fitness levels. “We have participants ranging from 3 – 83 years old,” Bingham noted. “You can walk it, run it, or even stroll with your family.”
With last year’s event seeing temperatures reach 97 degrees, the ice bath setup by Coleman Engineering was a hit and is expected to be a popular feature again this year. “Chuck from Coleman Engineering does an excellent job with the ice bath every year, and participants really appreciated it last time,” said Bingham.
Registration remains open until the day of the event, and pricing is accessible for all. YMCA members can participate for $30, while non-members can join for $35. Children aged 5 & under can participate for free.
“It’s not a timed event, so it’s all about having fun,” Bingham emphasized. “Whether you’re running or walking, it’s a great way to enjoy a family outing.”
Looking ahead, the Northern Lights YMCA in Dickinson County is also offering tailored triathlon training in preparation for the U.P. Northwoods Triathlon on September 1st at Lake Antoine Park. This year’s Triathlon includes options for a duathlon, Olympic triathlon, Sprint triathlon, youth triathlon, and a sprint team triathlon. Training sessions are held on Wednesdays and Fridays, covering cycling, running, and swimming.
“Getting those tips and pointers during training can really help,” added Bingham. “We meet on Wednesdays for cycling and running, and Fridays for swimming.”
