GRANT TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WZMQ) – The Keweenaw County Sheriff’s Office responded to a distress signal on Lake Superior in Grant Township on Monday afternoon.
At approximately 2 pm, officers were dispatched to a S.O.S. signal located offshore from Horseshoe trail.
Copper Harbor Fire, Keweenaw County Search and Rescue, Michigan Parks and Recreation, and the U.S. Coast Guard (Portage) assisted in looking for Cale Prozen from Minnesota.
The Keweenaw County Sheriff’s Office launched a personal watercraft and their boat, with the Michigan Parks crew and the U.S. Coast Guard also responding with boats in the area. Copper Harbor Fire and the Keweenaw County Search and Rescue team searched the area by land.
Due to the favorable weather conditions at the time, the kayaker was located quickly north of Keystone Bay and the Sheriff’s personal watercraft. It was determined that the subject was not in any danger, and had a faulty emergency beacon.
The Keweenaw County Sheriff’s Office wants to remind the public to double check their equipment and know limits before venturing into the outlying landscapes and enjoying the area.
