Iron Mountain Fire Department rushed to the scene of a fierce structure fire at a two-story residence on 630 East H Street. With reports suggesting that there may be occupants still inside, and that the situation was urgent.
The devastating fire resulted in one fatality and several minor injuries late into the night, according to Iron Mountain Director of Police and Fire Services Ed Mattson. The blaze, which destroyed the ten-unit building, has left the structure a total loss.
Community members have expressed deep concern for the displaced residents, many of whom may not have renters insurance. Preliminary estimates suggest that between 10 – 20 people may now be in need of assistance from the Red Cross. The exact number of displaced residents is still being determined.
Local authorities are continuing their investigation into the cause of the fire, while the community rallies to support those affected by this tragic event.
A section of H street has been cautioned off west of Jackson Street between H and G street for safety.
