HARRIS, Mich. (WZMQ) – On Thursday and Friday, local elected leaders attended the Upper Peninsula Association of County Commissioners Conference (UPACC) at the Island Resort & Casino.
County commissioners from across the U.P. meet twice a year to discuss the issues that are important to their constituents. They also heard about the latest legislation from guest speakers like State Senator Ed McBroom and Representative Jenn Hill.
Major topics on this UPACC agenda included the future of U.P. railroads, county-wide recycling plans, and cybersecurity.
“Every county has some of the same problems; some of the counties have a little different problems, depending where you’re at,” said Dickinson County Commissioner Joe Stevens. “We’re a huge area up here, between Ironwood and the Soo. We don’t always get to see each other that often, so this is a chance for all of us to get together, work through problems and issues that benefit our community.”
The three winners of the May 7 Delta County recall election were invited to attend as commissioners-elect, despite the Board of Canvassers’ failure to certify the election results prior to the conference. The Board of Canvassers certified the results on Friday evening.
