GLADSTONE, Mich (WZMQ)- This past Saturday cub scout troops from all across the Upper Peninsula gathered in Gladstone MI, for their Cub Olympics. This event has been happening for years but just last year did the Gladstone troop open it up to the rest of the U.P.
This friendly competition is a way for the kids to get outside, and socialize with some friends as well as a chance for them to put their all into something. The age range was K through 5th grade. There are 5 events offered, 40-yard dash, balance beam race, curling, long jump, shot put, and the recent addition of the gantlet.
There are trophies given to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd placers, as well as a couple of special awards for best sport and most effect, etc. However, everyone receives a participation badge just for joining in on the fun. Although, this event is not about winning or losing it is about the kids and the community that surrounds them.
“Ya the fishing and hiking you know, but we care and we’re trying to teach the kids to care and give back to the community that gives back to us”, Gary Howell, District membership committee chair.
These kids are taught to always do their best, and they for sure did at this event. Gladstone Cub Scouts and surrounding areas are having a recruitment in Escanaba on June 1st, for more information on that or just on Cub Scouts in general go to their website.
