MARQUETTE, Mich (WZMQ) – Flooding season is approaching us, however, it does not seem to be coming with the same energy it has been. Since this winter was so mild, the flood season is expected to also be a mild season.
In previous years, the flooding season that follows the winter has been impactful due to the amount of snow melting. Due to the lack of snow, the predictions for this flooding season are very light. The majority of the flooding is presumed to be coming from the rainfall. And as always nothing can be easy so just cause the floods are light does not mean there is not something else.
Houghton and Keweenaw County emergency management coordinators shared how the chances of wildfires have increased. Due to the lack of moisture, the likelihood of wildfire catching has grown since previous years.
“You know the flooding was significantly less this year, the flip side to all of this of course is, concerns about wildfires” Chris VanArsdale, emergency management coordinator.
Ways to be proactive and work against wildfires by making sure the fire is fully put out, and there are no grass leaves or anything else that may be able to catch fire close by. Another huge way to prevent wildfires is by making sure you are checking smokey the bear and how dry the air is that day.
The emergency management organization hopes everyone has a safe spring and summer and enjoys the outdoors.
