MARQUETTE, Mich, (WZMQ) – Tonight the Marquette Planning Commission voted to send the draft of a new city master plan to the Marquette City Commission, with a list of recommended changes.
Along with the master plan, the Planning Commission decided to recommend that the City Commission increase the number of people allowed in a family housing unit from four to five.
While many on the Planning Commission are are confident this will make more housing available in Marquette, some commissioners are afraid it may cause other problems.
“Going to five or six or whatever you want to go to, also eliminates any house that’s coming up at a reasonable cost for a family to buy,” said Planning Commissioner Wayne Premeau, “because it will get bought up and turned into a five person rental.”
The new master plan will be voted on by the City Commission later this year after public discussion, and the family housing changes will be discussed with the City Commission at a special work session next Tuesday May 14.
