MARQUETTE, Mich, (WZMQ) – With the weather warming, the Marquette Police Department (MPD) is reminding bikers, walkers, and drivers to share the road respectfully.
Drivers should be aware of bikers both in dedicated bike lanes, and sharing a lane with cars, and give them as much space as possible when passing them.
Police also remind bikers to wear visible clothing even during the day, and obey all traffic laws while riding on the road.
“Bikes can be on the roadway, so drivers just be aware that they will be on the roads and we need to share that space,” said Marquette Police Road Patrol Captain James Finkbeiner. “For bikers initially is if you are going to be travelling on the roads make sure that you’re following the rules of the road just like a car does, you have to stop and stop signs, you’re supposed to signal and let people know where you’re going, and ride cautiously.”
Police also remind bikers to be aware of people walking on the multi-use trails, and as always, wear a helmet.
