ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – On Saturday, Bay College hosted its 2024 commencement ceremony.
Graduates were ushered into the Physical Education Center by the Crazy Boy singers, who played an honor song during the procession. Bay College faculty recognized graduates who have served in the military, those receiving honors, and notable staff and alumni.
Samantha Griebel gave the student commencement speech. Griebel detailed her journey as a non-traditional, first-generation college student and how Bay College helped her to achieve her goals.
“The idea of balancing classes, a job, and family responsibilities seemed overwhelming,” she said. “It was almost overwhelming to realize that although I didn’t have a ton of support behind me, I did in front of me… I felt that no matter how many times I changed my mind or didn’t do as well as I wanted on an assignment or life outside of school became too overwhelming to continue, I was still shown the same support and guidance as I was on day one.”
Griebel continued, “I encourage everyone—not just my fellow graduates—to look towards their own future and push themselves past any fears they may have, because they just might realize that the future in front of them is brighter than they could’ve ever imagined.”
Bay College President Dr. Nerita Hughes told the graduates, “Remember that education does not stop here. It is a lifelong journey filled with endless possibilities and radical imagination. Your education has given you the tools to carry with you the values of integrity, compassion, and empathy. As you embark on your next adventure, whether it be to further your education, pursuing your entrepreneurial desires, or entering the workforce, I urge you to remain steadfast in your pursuit of excellence. Embrace curiosity, continue to learn, and strive to make a positive difference in the world. Your actions have the power to shape the future, and you will leave an unforgettable mark on society.”
