Pro-Palestine protestors set up encampment to “disrupt” NMU campus

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – Northern Michigan University students and Marquette community members have set up a pro-Palestine encampment on the campus of NMU.

At 2:30 pm on Friday, there were several tents and about 15 protestors in the university’s quad. According to protesters the goal of the encampment is for NMU to “disclose and divest” from Israel and Tel-Aviv University.

Protester Josie Steed told 19 News the protest will be non-violent but will disrupt the campus at NMU. According to Steed, making noise, chants, and singing are planned to take place at the encampment.

“As far as I have heard NMU is going to work with us as long as we are non violent,” said Steed. “Our plan is to be disruptive and again not violent, ever, and we want to reiterate we are against zionist apartheid state, and not Jews or Jewish people in any form.”

A spokesperson for NMU sent the following statement to 19 News about the encampment:

“NMU leadership has an open dialogue with the students involved with the encampment. The students’ efforts to exercise their free speech rights and raise awareness of a major world issue are appreciated and respected. The students have requested and received permission for the encampment. Additionally, the students have requested information on university connections, contracts and investments and the administration is responding to those inquiries.”

19 News will continue to follow this story as more updates become available.
