HOUGHTON, Mich. (WZMQ) – Michigan Technological University has welcomed new graduates. Over a thousand Husky’s have joined the alumni club following Michigan Technological University’s 2024 commencement ceremony on Saturday, April 27th.
“You get to know these students and you saw them when they came the first day and you get to watch them cross the stage on their last day,” commented Dean of Students Kellie Raffaelli.
Class speaker, Vincent Barfield, said he wasn’t entirely available for being class speaker, but knew he could rely on his tenacity, a word faculty and new alumni commonly say well represents the Huskies.
“I wanted to give something for the students not necessarily for the faculty or the family, but we’re all leaving this place it’s been our home for a long time. You gotta have a reason to keep going and I guess we all went to an engineering school to do cool stuff so let’s go and do the cool stuff we always wanted to do,” commented Barfield.
Graduates said although some classes in college are typically required, one of those might spark a passion that leads to a double major and two minors, like new graduate Alyssa Church.
“You have to take exploring majors at Michigan Tech if you’re coming undecided. Heather Sympson teaches it and through that class I learned that I really wanted to do Biology,” commented Church. MTU Graduates had a common message for undergraduates just coming through the campus, make an effort to get involved, and know you’re not alone.
“You’re going so scared but everyone else is also terrified and looking to make friends so just get involved in whatever you can,” commented Bachelors in Biological Sciences Halle Hill.
“I went on a field school where I got to do Archeology like hands-on stuff and I was like I wanna do that for the rest of my life like that’s what I wanna do so that’s when I added that second major,” commented Church.
“I’ve tried enterprises I’ve done undergraduate research, I was an RA and a senior RA have been president of a club sport, just get involved try new things and have fun with it,” continued Hill.
