Michigan Tech fans travel to Rhode Island to support Huskies

HOUGHTON, Mich. (WZMQ) – On Thursday over 100 Michigan Tech students boarded a bus and headed to Rhode Island to support the Huskies.

If you have ever been to a hockey game at the Macinnes Student Ice Arena then you’re familiar with the Mitch’s Misfits. if you haven’t it’s not hard to figure out what they’re all about.

“We are kinda the super fans of the hockey team, we identify as the group that starts and leads all of the chants. It’s about a section of 100 of us or so,” said Kellan Meloche, the President of Mitch’s Misfits.

Right now these die hard fans are making a 20 hour bus trip across the country, to an outsider it seems extreme, but to any of the Misfits it was an easy decision.

“That’s what sets the Misfits apart from other student sections,” Kellan went on to say “For some of these big schools out east they have heard about Tech because they have heard about the misfits.”

The school provided 1 bus to take fans to the game. When more students signed up to go then there were seats available a group of Michigan Tech Alumni stepped in.

“My first thought was to call the athletic director and find out how much another bus cost, so then I reached out to our alumni and we figured that we could do it,” said Tim Braun, the founder of the Mitch’s Misfits and Tech Hockey Guide.

In total between the alumni’s donations and the university’s campaign nearly $25,000 were raised. The funds will pay for transportation and lodging for the students.

According to Tim Braun who organized the donations, getting the fans to the game was just a way to pay it forward.

“If the students want to go I want them to be able to and I want them to support the team in any way they can,” added Braun.

If Michigan Tech advances in the NCAA tournament the Misfits plan on traveling to watch them play.
