ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – Governor Whitmer and the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity are recognizing one U.P. organization’s efforts to help young people enter the workforce.
Upper Peninsula Michigan Works! (UPMW) has received $213,787 for its Young Professionals initiative, geared toward those ages 14 to 24.
“Michigan Works! helps youth and young adults get into the workforce by providing them with resources such as career exploration skills, job readiness, resume writing, educational opportunities, and addressing barriers to employment,” explained UPMW Business Services Specialist Tonya Heikkinen. “We also do offer in-demand, short-term training.”
Heikkinen says the program can open up possibilities that young professionals may never have considered.
“Sometimes they aren’t aware of the employers in the area and the opportunities that present themselves along with the good-paying jobs that are available to them,” she said. “What we want them to do is to be able to dive deep into what their future looks like and what that entails as a career that they chose.”
