MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – A silent auction benefit through the Lake Superior Art Association is bringing more light to the trailblazers growing the Marquette Art scene to what it is today.
On Northern Michigan University’s campus, the association honored Anita Elke Meyland, the original organizer of the first Art on the Rocks.
There were various art pieces available in the silent auction, a retrospective around Meyland’s life, all to benefit a scholarship that’s offered to students attending Northern wanting to pursue arts. “It used to really bother her that you’d go into a souvenir shop and you couldn’t find anything made in the UP and so she said we’re gonna change that, there’s gonna be a UP craft council,” commented Presenter Ann Hilton Fischer.
“I never thought that there’d be this many people for a party about Anita Meyland who’s been gone for many years I’m thinking who even remembers her but look at. People really support the arts up here in Marquette,” Presenter Jack Deo.
