WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Jack Bergman (R- MI) is pressing Aspirus Health for answers on closing their Ontonagon hospital emergency and general services.
A couple of days ago, Aspirus Health announced they’re transitioning their Ontonagon hospital into a rural health clinic in mid-April. Bergman told WZMQ he’s looking for answers as to why they’re abruptly closing emergency services, which is something the community needs. Bergman said he feels like Aspirus is ripping the rug out from under the community by not giving proper notice about the changes.
“Within Ontonagon and that whole area you’ve got the Porcupine Mountains and whether it be the people that live there full time or literally the hundreds of thousands that come to the area to recreate what if there is a medical emergency,” said Rep. Bergman. “What do you do? So right now we’re still in a discovery phase to understand exactly what the decision process was with Aspirus to do this closure but it’s obviously a failure to let people know, that’s bad on them.”
WZMQ reached out to Aspirus on this. Other than their press release, they said they do not have additional information to share at this time.
