IRON MOUNTAIN, Mich. (WZMQ) Tonight marks the kickoff for the Marshfield Medical Center, Dickinson’s Pine Mountain Continental Cup Competition, with the ‘Meet the Jumpers’ event at Pine Mountain Ski and Golf Resort, organized by the Kiwanis Ski Club. Athletes from around the globe, ranging from seasoned record-holders to first-time jumpers, are gearing up for a thrilling weekend of ski jumping action.

Ziga Jelar, representing Slovenia, is back at Pine Mountain with a clear goal: reclaiming the hill record. Reflecting on the experience, he emphasizes the importance of the crowd: “It’s always nice to see happy faces, they’re enjoying it. And if they’re enjoying it, we are also enjoying it.”

Jonas Schuster, a first-time jumper from Austria, is eager to experience the renowned Pine Mountain Hill. He shares, “I heard only good things from all my teammates. They said it’s one of the nicest hills and one of the nicest competitions in the U.S. so I am very looking forward to jump.” Schuster’s dad has shaped his journey as an athlete. His dad is Werner Schuster, a ski jumper and trainer who has made his mark on the Pine Mountain hill.

Ulrich Wohlgenannt, also from Austria, brings his experience from around 5 previous jumps on Pine Mountain Hill. Confident in his abilities, he aims for his personal best and hopes for victory. Describing the unique atmosphere, he says, “It’s just a special occasion here. It’s probably the most people-watching here in the whole continental cup. So it’s very great to jump here. Nice atmosphere and the hill is very, very cool.”

Jason Colby, one of the youngest competitors at 17 from Steamboat Springs, Colorado, aims not only to excel, but also to promote the sport in the United States. He shares, “I guess trying to make the sport bigger in the United States. Because it’s not very big in the U.S. but it is over in Europe. And to get more kids involved to help build the sport.”

As the excitement builds, the Kiwanis Ski Club extends its gratitude to Pine Mountain Ski Resort for hosting tonight’s meet and greet, setting the stage for an electrifying weekend of ski jumping prowess and passion. Keep tuning in to WZMQ 19 News for competitive updates on the ski jumping action.
