ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – Holy Name Catholic School students and administrators are preparing for an Open House, Registration Night, and Art Gallery on Tuesday, February 27.
Fifth grader Rubie Nyquist has been hard at work on her pieces for the art gallery.
“This side of the earth is like all happy and sunny and stuff and shows the trees and how people recycle,” Rubie said, holding up the drawing shown below. “Then this side is how people are destroying our earth by littering and leaving trash all over the place.”
She also made a drawing of the Holy Name Crusaders logo to show her love for her school, as well as a three-dimensional flower in a pot.
“[Art] is just something that gets your mind working, and it’s very relaxing,” said Rubie.
According to Deacon Bob Berbohm, Holy Name’s Acting Principal and Faith Formation Coordinator, students in kindergarten through eighth grade have been creating in and out of the classroom all school year. He says he has been impressed with the variety of mediums they have utilized.
“There’s everything from drawings, paintings, digital art, sculpture, and architecture,” he listed. “I think it shows our students’ versatility, various levels of talent, how they’re able to express themselves using art. We’re just so proud of our kids.”
In addition to the gallery, Tuesday’s Open House will feature piano and violin music and free refreshments. Guests are encouraged to tour the school and to ask about Holy Name’s new Welcome Scholarship, available up to twelfth grade.
“It’s a $1,000 scholarship for new students,” Berbohm explained. “Any faith background are eligible. We’ll have staff here to answer those questions, help with registration.”
Rubie is excited for the opportunity to share her art, and the lessons she’s learned from her art teacher, with the community.
“Ms. Pangborn is a very good art teacher,” Rubie said. “She teaches very well and she’s just shown all of our classes how art is really a type of virtue that God wants us to see.”
Deacon Berbohm hopes the students’ creativity and passion have an impact on visitors.
“Holy Name is not just education, it’s a way of life,” he said. “We do present our faith, we have a classical curriculum that we’re working to develop every year, and we continue to grow and try to meet the needs—both spiritually and physically—of all the students.”
The Open House, Registration Night, and Art Gallery will run from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on the 27th. Click here or call (906) 786-7550 for more information about Holy Name Catholic School.
