DELTA COUNTY, Mich. (WZMQ) – Delta County authorities are urging people to stay off of the ice as temperatures shift this week.

Around 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday, February 13, Delta County Sheriff’s deputies and ice rescue personnel were dispatched to Little Bay de Noc, a mile east of the Days River. According to a post on the department’s Facebook page, an individual on a four-wheeler had fallen through the ice.

The Ice Rescue team used drones to locate them. Responders were able to rescue the victim using the Sheriff’s Office’s airboat, which was purchased with ARP grant funds last fall.

The Sheriff’s Office released footage of the rescue on Facebook to highlight the lifesaving equipment used and to show the public how dangerous the ice conditions are.

“With the temperatures dropping over the next couple days, those spots of open water will get a thin layer of ice on them, making them look like they are safe,” the Facebook post reads.

Officials say with ice conditions changing on a regular basis, the public should stay off of the ice at this time.

Deputies were assisted by the Michigan State Police and Rampart EMS. Delta County Ice Rescue is comprised of Delta County Search and Rescue, Ensign Fire, Masonville Fire and EMS, and Gladstone Fire.
