NEGAUNEE, Mich. (WZMQ) – The South Shore Fishing Association is postponing its second annual Teal Lake Ice Fishing Derby due to poor conditions on the lake.
The derby was set to take place this Saturday, Feb. 2 during Negaunee’s Heikki Lunta festival. The SSFA posted to its Facebook page that the ice on Teal Lake is not in good condition to support the event.
You can read the full statement below:
After hours of monitoring and testing ice conditions, speaking to local law enforcement, and the City of Negaunee, the SSFA Tournament Committee has made the hard decision to postpone the Heikki Lunta 2024 Teal Lake Ice Fishing Derby due to poor ice conditions. We will continue to monitor ice conditions and evaluate if we will be able to host this event this year.
See our ice report below:
Good ice (6-8”) about 100 yards from shore from Gravedoni’s around the boat launch and down the highway. About the same near the shore on the West end. Outside that area and about 3/4 of the lake, ice is spotty depending on lake depth and springs. Found numerous spots where the springs had chewed holes in the ice. Those spots were thinnest along with the hole in front of Lakeview Elementary. About half of the remaining 3/4 of the lake has 4-6 inches of slush on top of 2-4” good black ice. The black good ice underneath is clear, smooth, and slippery making travel by foot difficult and anything motorized unsafe with a high probability of getting stuck or going through the ice.
We value the safety of anglers. If you continue to ice fish during this time, please respect the ice and don’t go uninformed.
