MAPS board narrows high school nickname options down to 3

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – The Marquette Area Public School board narrowed the options for the high school’s new nickname down to three Tuesday night.

Earlier this month, the board announced the Marquette Senior High School advisory classes helped the board choose 34 name ideas from the hundreds of name submissions collected from the community, which the board narrowed down to eight. Tuesday night, the board selected Reds, Red Jackets, and Sentinels as the top three.

The board says some names that were cut were either being used by other school districts or the community shared a negative opinion on it.

At Tuesday’s meeting, there were no comments from the public, though the board offered time for anyone interested– and less than a dozen people showed up. The board president says the board received numerous emails from the community after the top eight nickname choices were announced.

“When it comes down to it it’s not about the seven school board members it’s about the students and what they want to represent them so it is good to have student voices and also community voices too,” commented School Board President Kristen Cambensy.

The board plans to make a final decision on the nickname next Monday, Jan. 22. Cambensy says the next step will be deciding on a mascot and other visual aspects of the high school’s rebranding.
