MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – A late season of snow may have prolonged ice fishing, but the DNR still wants to prepare those taking part in the season.
The Michigan Natural Resources Commission just approved a new regulation limiting the amount of steelhead trout any fisherman can harvest to one per day. This species does populate the Carp River in Marquette County. The mandate does not include any weight class and takes effect on April 1st.
“If you’re on an A-type lake there’s these restrictions and you’ll find that there’s fishing for all different kinds of species for the winter but it just depends on what lake or river or what section of river you’re fishing,” commented the DNR Public Information Officer John Pepin.
The DNR noted that even though the species only populates a certain area in the UP, it’s important to check the DNR’s Fishing Digest which displays each species of fish you might find in the waters in the UP.
