MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – The Marquette Area Public School board has whittled hundreds of nickname submissions from the community into a list of eight.
The MAPS Board of Education says as part of Marquette Senior High School’s rebranding process, 34 potential nicknames were discussed, provided by the MSHS Advisory classes.
The board approved eight names for consideration: Cardinals, Hawks, Marauders, Reds, Redtail Hawks, Red Hawks, Red Jackets, and Sentinels. The board says the name must pay tribute to the unique aspects of the school district and community and cannot reference any protected class.
The board says it will continue discussing those names at its meeting on January 16 and make a final decision at its meeting on January 22.
Community input and feedback can be sent to schoolboard@mapsnet.org.
