NEWBERRY, Mich, (WZMQ) – The 22nd Tahquamenon Country Sled Dog Race (TCSDR) was set to being this weekend but with the lack of snowfall this year it was cancelled.
The TCSDR Board of Directors is looking into options for the future, but with the trails having less than an inch of snow, and no snow in the forecast, organizers say they have to keep their dogs and mushers safe.
The recent trends in weather, the TCSDR Secretary Laura Bontrager said they may consider moving the race to later in the winter next year.
“We’re working with our sponsors and volunteers to come up with a plan that is going to lead us to be better prepared,” said Bontrager. “Maybe this is a trend that we do need to move the date back, so we are talking about all sorts of different options for that.”
The board of directors plans to discuss their upcoming options going forward at their meeting on Thursday.
