MARQUETTE, Mich, (WZMQ) – Today the Marquette County Election Commission held a meeting to address a recall petition filed by Ishpeming citizen Michael Tonkin against City Councilor Lindsay Bean.
The petition alleged that Councilor Bean had broken the city charter and violated Michigan’s Open Meeting’s act.
The commission found that the petition was too vague and unspecific to move forward with a recall effort.
“I don’t believe that the petition at hand is clearly informing the electorate regarding the nature and circumstances surrounding the alleged acts, said County Probate Judge Cheryl Hill, who presided over the meeting. “They are also insufficient in that they fail to supply the elected official and the electorate with any notice as to the specific incidents to which the allegations refer.
Ishpeming City Manager Craig Cugini who was also implicated in the petition said he was not surprised by the outcome.
“As expected, the Marquette County Election Board denied the recall language because it was unclear and completely baseless,” said Cugini. “We look forward to continuing the important work of carrying out the business of the City and proudly serving our residents.”
The petitioners say the plan to try again with another petition in the future.
