NEGAUNEE, Mich. (WZMQ) – The snow coverage from Sunday night has carried into the majority of today, with slipper road conditions getting worse. Snow coverage around Marquette has had a slow start this season, even the National Weather Service is reporting this December already had record-breaking high temperatures for the UP.
Meteorologists say that even though late last week brought rainy weather that turned to snow, they predict warmer temperatures later in the week to melt most of the snow around the lake away.
“With that could be some higher dew points too and the higher dew point temperatures start to get above freezing is when the snow really starts to melt pretty quick so my best guess, is it’s looking like there could be some pretty good chunks of the UP that do get a green Christmas,” commented National Weather Service Meteorologist Evan Kutta.
In the UP, only roughly 7 percent of these recording winters have seen a green Christmas, four of which have occurred within the last twenty years (diagram picture below).
