MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – A confirmed case of rabies in a U.P. domesticated skunk has left veterinarians concerned.
The now deceased skunk was named Dixie, and had contact with an unknown number of individuals. According to the pets veterinarian the animals owners would show the animal off and allow for photos to be taken with it.
The rabies strain has been confirmed to have come from a skunk breeder in the Detroit area.
“It turns out the skunk came from a breeder down state which housed both wild skunks and domesticated skunks, which is absolute no-no, and there is a problem with rabies and skunks down in Metro Detroit in the thumb,” said Dr. Tim Hunt, the animals veterinarian.
According to Dr.Hunt human to human transmission of rabies is very unlikely however if you came into contact with the animal you should immediately seek medical advice from your physician.
