HOUGHTON, Mich. (WZMQ) – A grassroots movement in the Copper Country supporting Ukraine held an impromptu rally Thursday afternoon along with dozens of other communities across the country.
Yoopers for Ukraine lined up at the end of Shelden Ave. in Houghton holding signs in support of funding aid to Ukraine in its fight against Russia.
The organizer and co-founder of the group, Nadija Packauskas, said in a statement, “In response to yesterday’s events on the Capitol and the recent rhetoric surrounding continued support of Ukraine. We have to show our legislators in Washington that Ukraine cannot be used as a human shield in their political games!”
Packauskas says about 50 other communities around the U.S. held rallies in support of Ukraine Thursday as well.
“I pray that we, as Americans, continue to do the right thing so that our military continues to be only support rather than in the fight,” she continued.
Ukraine’s war with Russia began in February of 2022.
