LANSING, Mich, (WZMQ) – On Tuesday Governor Gretchen Whitmer and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources announced the recommendation of nine recipients of the combined $6,461,500 in the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) grants.
The LWCF is from the federal government and meant to help give people more access to quality outdoor recreation.
Among the recipient projects was an 8,000 acre land acquisition in Keweenaw County for $3.5 million.
“Today’s upgrades will increase access to rivers and nature parks, create outdoor courts and fields, and renovate parks that people of all abilities can use and enjoy every day,’ said Governor Whitmer. “Let’s keep working together to make Michigan a better state to live, work, and play.”
Michigan DNR Director Scott Bowen said the LWCF is helping provide opportunities for Michiganders to enjoy the outdoors.
“The Land and Water Conservation Fund, along with many other important grant programs administered by the DNR, is vital to expanding opportunities for outdoor recreation by creating spaces for all of Michigan’s residents and visitors to enjoy,” said Director Bowen. “Whether through the creation of multi-use trails, community campground improvements, or the addition of accessible playgrounds, these grants help to connect people to the outdoors.”
Governor Whitmer’s and the Michigan DNR’s recommendations will be sent to the National Parks Service for approval.
