MARQUETTE, Mich, (WZMQ) – At Monday’s meeting the City Commission approved an extension on a labor agreement with the Department of Public Works (DPW).
The original agreement was effective October of 2021 and was set to end September of 2024.
The City Commission and the DPW agreed to extend the agreement for another three years.
The new agreement increases wages by 5% for 2023 and 3% for 2024 and 2025, plus a one-time $400 signing bonus.
City Manager Karen Kovacs said this agreement effects not only the DPW but the whole city.
“Public works and utilities, they’re the ones that make our city run on a daily basis,” said Kovacs “we’re making sure that we have competitive wages and keep up with the time and keep that talent here and be proud of that.”
The total cost for the first year’s 5% increase and signing bonus will cost approximately, $152,000.
The new agreement expires December of 2026.
