Marquette Police Department is offering vacant house checks

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – This holiday season Marquette Police Department (MPD) will be offering up services to help traveling residents keep a safe eye on their vacant home, business, or other property.

These offered services are for any length trip, whether you are going on a short vacation or headed out of town for a while, MPD will send out officers on random days and times every week to check on registered homes.

“There’s a lot of people that do leave for the winter time from our area,” Says James Finkbeiner, MPD Captain. “So we do offer a home service check, and what we do is our officers will check on the houses periodically, every week, sometimes multiple times a week.”

There are many ways that someone can sign up for vacant home checks, one way to sign up is by calling the office at (906) 228-0400 and leaving the needed information with a clerk. Another way is by visiting the city website, going to the police tab filling out the vacant home form, and submit it to police at MarquetteMI.gov. The last way that you can sign up for home check ins, is simply by going to the police department and filling out the request form.

“Even if you have somebody that’s kinda keeping an eye on you residents, weather it’s a neighbor or a family member, sometimes they’re gone,” says Finkbeiner. “They may leave for a period of time, so now you may go a long period of time without someone checking the house. It may not be somebody that tries to do something like break into the house, it could be something as simple as a broken pipe or you loose heat. If we’re checking the house periodically a lot of times we are gonna notice that, and are able to get the help that’s needed.”

The police are happy to take request from anyone who would like home checks, encouraging Marquette citizens to use these services, and to also give additional information about their homes that can help patrol notice anything out of place.

This service is only offered for people that live withing the city limits of Marquette.
