MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – The Marquette School Board is seeking the public’s suggestions for a new Marquette Senior High mascot and nickname.
On Monday, Oct. 23, the school board launched a website taking name suggestions to replace Redmen/Redettes nickname and mascot.
So far, the website has received over 1,000 suggestions from members of the community. Although residents have suggested it, the board has ruled out the Redmen/Redette nickname.
The board has stated parameters have been set on the new nickname:
- It must be gender neutral
- It should reflect an aspect of the Marquette community
- It cannot reference a protected class (race, religion, sexual orientation)
According to the board, community members are limited to one entry on the website but can include as many name suggestions as they want. Multiple suggestions can be included in each submission.
“The board will make the ultimate decision as to what our new nickname is, but we are trying to get as much community input as possible, because the board cannot make this decision in a vacuum, so we need input from our community,” said school board president Kristen Cambensy.
The website will be open through November 17. To submit a name idea, click here.
